Your bedroom environment can have a significant impact of the quality of sleep you enjoy
If you regularly find yourself tired all day due to a bad night’s sleep, your bedroom could be to blame. Switching up your bedroom design can help you enjoy improved sleep quality, so here are our top tips for getting the most out of your sleep space.
Prioritise serenity
When finalising your bedroom décor, keep serenity and relaxation in mind. Picking a paint colour? Try a peaceful blue or lavender shade. Looking for wall art? Nature views and moonlit scenes are a great way to encourage a clear mind. Introduce elements like soft textures, plush bedding and blackout blinds to boost your chances of good sleep at every turn.
Leave work out of it
The bedroom shouldn’t double as an office, even if you work from home. Working from bed in your PJs might sound like a tempting option, but over time it can cause your brain to associate the bedroom with work stress, rather than relaxation, recharging and unwinding. Make sure all your work equipment and tech is left out of your sleep space.
Declutter
Clutter can all too easy destroy a serene vibe. Having lots of ornaments, books and knick knacks is one thing, but allowing the bedroom to become untidy with bits and pieces and rubbish left out is never a good idea. Invest in smart bedroom storage like under-the-bed trays or nightstands with drawers.
Introduce lighting options
Every bedroom should have lighting options because it helps you wind down to eventual shut-eye. While you’ll probably have a main light, you should also have a bedside light and even fairy lights or mood lighting to help you darken the room gradually. And it’s also a good idea to ban any blue light devices from the bedroom that can inhibit the release of sleep hormones, like smartphones, laptops and televisions.
Lower the temperature
Being too hot to sleep is one of the most uncomfortable sensations out there, leading to a restless night. Keep your bedroom cool to encourage better sleep, as studies have found that around 15 degrees is ideal for optimum sleep.
Invest in good bedding
It’s tempting to opt for the cheapest option when it comes to bedding, but your body will thank you for forking out that little bit extra on high quality options. From soft sheets to supportive pillows, the right bedding can help you wake up feeling rested every day.
Reduce noise pollution
We often talk about blocking out light here on the blog but don’t forget about the disturbance caused by sound. Television noises, smartphone beeps and more can all disrupt our sleep quality, as can street noise from outside. Do what you can to keep your bedroom quiet and, for those noises you can’t control, consider white noise. The National Sleep Foundation found that ambient noise can block background noise and help you sleep more soundly.
Create ambience with scent
Scent is another aspect you should factor in when revamping your bedroom. Lavender has been shown to decrease your heart rate, skin temperature and blood pressure, encouraging good sleep, so consider a diffuser or a pillow mist that’s rich in lavender goodness.
Make your bed every day
Your morning behaviours can impact your night-time sleep quality, including whether or not you make your bed. A National Sleep Foundation poll found that those who regularly made their bed felt that it strongly influenced how well they slept.
Meditate to decompress
The activities you enjoy in the run up to bedtime are key to determining how good your sleep will be. Instead of scrolling through social media or watching TV until lights out, consider a more relaxing activity like reading, running a hot bath, or even meditating as a way to clear your mind at the end of the day. Create a little space in your bedroom designated to mindfulness where you can retreat before sleep.
