With the seasons changing, it’s time for a refresh
Spring is a time for new starts, and a lot of us use this change in seasons as a chance to look at our homes with fresh eyes. That’s why spring cleaning is a staple of this time of year.
But spring cleaning is arguably most important in the bedroom. If you struggle to sleep, it could be that your bedroom environment is to blame. Giving your bedroom a refresh could be the change you need in order to fall asleep more easily and enjoy better quality rest overall.
With that in mind, here are four ways to give your bedroom the refresh it deserves, and promote better sleep in the process.
Tidy house, tidy mind
Numerous studies have shown that clutter and mess cause stress. From making it more difficult to locate items you need to the general unpleasantness of being in messy surroundings, an untidy bedroom can cause you to feel stressed. This, in turn, can impact your ability to focus and relax, making it more difficult to get the rest you need.
Take the time to give your bedroom a good tidy, removing clutter, dusting and cleaning your bedding. Even something as simple as making your bed can have a positive impact, as a study by the National Sleep Foundation found that people who make their bed every day tend to sleep better and for longer.
Keep it cool and dark
Your body takes cues from your environment. When you expose yourself to natural light, your brain takes that as a cue to produce serotonin, otherwise known as your ‘happy hormone’. Serotonin is key for giving you the energy you need throughout the day, but when it comes to winding down before bed, serotonin is the last thing you need. Instead, your brain needs to take cues from a dark environment to create melatonin – the hormone that helps you rest and relax.
Blackout blinds or curtains can ensure your bedroom remains dark for sleep. Similarly, keeping your bedroom temperature cool will help lower your body temperature, making it easier to fall into deep sleep.
Consider your colour choices
Colours can have a direct impact on your mood, and some shades are thought to be more relaxing than others. Cool tones like blue, green and purple, and neutral shades like whites, creams and greys can help to create a more relaxing atmosphere than bolder, brighter colours like reds and oranges.
Cut out electronics
Technology is a key aspect of modern life, but where possible, you should leave it out of the bedroom. Studies have explored the impact smartphones are having on our energy levels, rest, and mental health, and the results aren’t positive. Spending hours scrolling through social media every day forces your brain to process huge amounts of information, making you more likely to experience anxiety. When done close to bed, this can make it more difficult to fall asleep. On top of this, the blue light emitted by screens can inhibit your natural melatonin release.
Aim to keep all electronics out of the bedroom to help your brain associate it with rest and escape. This includes smartphones, laptops, televisions and more.
