Mammoth is delighted to announce a partnership with Team Tyne Innovation. At a launch event on Friday 29th June at Gateshead’s Quayside, we unveiled the custom-made mattresses that the rowing quartet will be resting on during the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge later this year.

An epic 3,000 mile rowing marathon from the Canary Islands to Antigua, the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge is known for being one of the most gruelling endurance events on the planet. The four-person team from the North East of England will battle storms, sleep deprivation, salt sores and the physical wear and tear that comes with rowing “two hours on; two hours off” each day for up to two months.

At the event, held at HMS Calliope on the Gateshead Quayside, Mammoth fitted the mattresses into the boat’s cramped cabins and joined the team, including Claire Hughes, Dave Higgins, Guy Clack and Phil Kite, as they celebrated North East innovation and demonstrated the state-of-the-art items they will take with them on the challenge. Members of the public were also able to explore their boat, its layout and find out how it will be equipped to help them succeed in taking on the world’s toughest row, with its harsh conditions and up to 50 foot waves.

The mattresses, made of Mammoth’s sleep technology, Medical Grade™ Foam, are designed to enhance the crew’s performance by maximising rest and recovery ahead of a rigorous rowing schedule that will see them manning the oars for 12 hours a day.

Team Tyne member Phil Kite, said: “Sleep will be the cornerstone of our daily routine and absolute foundation for health and recovery during the challenge. We need resources that will provide the optimal comfort for rest and rehabilitation, which are vital for the rigorous and unrelenting rowing schedule we’re embarking on. Without the right kind of rest, we will majorly jeopardise our chances of completing the 3,000 mile challenge.

“It is great to have Mammoth on board with their bespoke mattresses which will aid recovery as much as possible within such cramped and chaotic conditions.”

Scientifically tested and shown to improve sleep, Mammoth mattresses are especially beneficial to athletes because they help them to reach their full potential through, ensuring optimal rest and rehabilitation. Mammoth has a long history supplying elite athletes and organisations, including members of GB Rowing Team, as well as thousands of sportspeople over the past decade.

We were joined at the event by local retailer Newbridge Street Bedding Centre, whose bed set and mattress were available to the general public for testing.

John Tuton, Founder and Managing Director of Mammoth, said: “Health and wellbeing, as well as innovation and creativity, are fundamental to Mammoth. Everything we do is based around these core values. As the makers of the bespoke, specially designed mattresses, we are over the moon to support the Team Tyne crew in their tough challenge.

“The event at HMS Calliope was fantastic to be involved in and to see the innovation, creativity and hard work of other North East businesses.

“Lots of people were keen to test out a Mammoth mattress for themselves and see why our sleep technologies set us apart from your standard mattress. It was particularly informative and good to learn about peoples’ sleep patterns and explain how Mammoth can help improve them. We wish the team the best of luck and we’re looking forward to their valuable feedback on the role our mattresses played in helping them reach that final mile!”

Team Tyne are taking on the Talisker Whisky Atlantic Challenge to raise £100,000 to support three North East charities close to its heart – The Stroke Association, St Oswald’s Hospice and Daft as a Brush. To find out more about Team Tyne’s participation and to support its fundraising target, visit
