Better Sleep case study: Dane Vilas


Lancashire County Cricketer, Dane Vilas, is well aware of the importance of staying fit and healthy to maintain performance. Dane has played in both the UK and South Africa, with hundreds of matches under his belt. We caught up with Dane to find out how he was enjoying his new Mammoth Shine mattress, and to discuss all things health, fitness and sleep.


Hi Dane,

How did you first get into cricket?

When I was growing up in South Africa, I spent all my time outdoors. I played all types of sport, but cricket just stuck with me.

How would you describe your career?

If I had to describe my career in three words, they would be up, down and sideways!

What would you class as your proudest moment?

My proudest career moment has been playing for my country. Outside of sport, my proudest moment has been the birth of my two children.

What does your typical fitness regime involve?

Always lots of running, including shuttles and repeat sprints as well as 2km and 5km runs. I also do a full body workout at the gym most days of the week.

It’s been an unusual year in 2020 to say the least. What are you most looking forward to in the next 12 months – both in and out of cricket?

I’m really looking forward to getting back into playing, as it’s been weird with the coronavirus and lockdown. After the season, I can’t wait to spend time together as a family in our new house – and my new bed!

How important do you consider rest and recovery to be as part of your training regime?

Hugely important! I’ve found that rest and a good night’s sleep is the best medicine for most issues. I aim to get 8 hours sleep each night, and I usually manage it. I have to say that it’s probably easier when I’m on tour and don’t have the kids waking me up early!

What impact does it have on you if you feel like you’ve not had a good night’s sleep?

I find myself getting anxious, as I know how important sleep is for me when it comes to recharging the batteries for a long day ahead.

Tell us about your sleep routine

I often struggle to fall asleep. However, once I’ve drifted off I definitely sleep like a log. I like a cool and clean sleep space, with a bed that has been made up. I like to relax, so I try and stay off my phone before bed and maybe read a book instead.

How did you first find out about Mammoth?

I found out about Mammoth through the Professional Cricketer’s Association, and I also did some research online. I recently bought a superking Shine 3 Medium mattress because I wanted the most comfortable and largest bed I could get. I wanted something I could feel totally relaxed in! If you could have a (purely platonic) late night chat with anyone, dead or alive, who’d be worth losing sleep over and why?

My grandfather. He was always one of my biggest supporters and I loved talking to him about anything and everything.
